February - Zine workshop No. 5

  • Arts & Cultural Exchange Parramatta 8 Victoria Road Parramatta, NSW, 2150 Australia (map)

UPDATE: Our February Zine Workshop is now full. REGISTER HERE for our next workshop on Saturday 15 March.

Watch this video of our Zine Workshop #4 (Zines & Beats with DJ Malco2m).

Learn to make a zine, work on your own publication, and connect with fellow zinesters.

The workshop will be facilitated by School of Zines’ creator, Aph, joined by our special guest Michiyo Miyake from the creative duo (with Nicholas Marshall) and independent publishing label Uguisu Books (Sydney/Tokyo).

Michiyo is a writer and translator, born in Japan and based in Australia. She began her career in Japan, publishing articles on British and American literature and culture during the inter-war period. Since relocating to Sydney in 2016, she has continued her literary pursuits and founded UGUISU BOOKS in 2023. Her recent publications include a novel Green Metal: Life in Tokyo during the Nuclear Catastrophe (2024) and spiral history: TIDE (2023), a zine about the history of the islands where Australia’s detention centres are located, in collaboration with the artist Haji Oh.

Michiyo Miyake of Uguisu Books will be co-facilitating our zine workshop.

Haji Oh/Michiyo Miyake (textus), spiral history: TIDE|Zine published by Uguisu Books.

Aphrodite and Michiyo are both zine-makers, book lovers and bookbinding enthusiasts. During our workshop, we will be exploring artful ways to bind zines including traditional Japanese binding techniques and using a basic sewing machine. As a special treat, Michiyo will also teach participants how to write their names in hiragana and katakana. :)

All participants will be guided and given resources to make zines on the spot. If you are a more experienced zine-maker and you wish to focus more on binding techniques, you are welcome to bring ready-made zines or sheets of paper you wish to bind into a notebook.

Workshop fee: $15*.
Pay by cash or card at the door.
